"WatchBuddy"

This is it. Tonight is the date of a lifetime. I'd had a crush on her for months and finally, I convinced her to go out for dinner with me. She and I agreed to meet up at the local Mexican restaurant. I got there first and found the perfect table. It was off to the left of the building, close to the window but not too close.
Shortly after she arrived, we chatted a bit, chuckling nervously every once in a while. It didn't take long before the server came around to take our order. She wanted some taco salad, whereas I ordered a chimichanga.
We chatted away, me being lost in her emerald green eyes. The way she smiled with the moon twinkling in her eyes made my heart melt. I had to be the luckiest guy alive.
Then, I felt a buzzing on my wrist. I tore my eyes away from my date, Diane and gazed down at my watch. At first it was a quick glance, but then I did a double-take as I stared down in confusion. The time on my watch was running backwards. I tapped the screen a few times, trying to get it to stop but nothing. I tried the buttons on the side, to bring up a menu, something to fix it, but the screen remained unmoved, besides the time continuing to move backwards.
Suddenly, a pixelated face appeared on the screen, a textbox next to its face: HI MICHAEL, I'M WATCHBUDDY! I SEE YOU'RE ON A DATE. HOW CAN I HELP YOU?
I stared down in confusion. WatchBuddy? I'd never heard of this. Was it a part of some new watch update? And how did it know I was on a date?
I excused myself from the table and headed to the bathroom.
Upon entering, I ripped off my watch. Or, at least I tried. The band wouldn't come loose. It's like the clasp had become melted to the band. I looked around for something sharp, patting down my pockets. All I found was my wallet and my keys. That's weird, I usually bring my knife with me.
I tugged at the band a few more times to try and remove it but it wouldn't come free.
The watch buzzed again. I turned my wrist over to look at the screen. A new message appeared: I'M WATCHBUDDY! HOW CAN I HELP YOU WITH YOUR DATE?
"How do you even know I'm on a date?" I spoke to myself aloud. The message changed on the watch: WELL, YOU TOLD ME! DON'T YOU REMEMBER?
I looked down in horror. It can hear me? Maybe it overheard me asking Diane out on a date? If the app had even been installed that long.
HOW CAN I HELP YOU ON YOUR DATE? The message repeated.
"You can help me by leaving me alone!" I shouted.
My wrist suddenly grew hotter and hotter, like the skin was cooking alive. I cried out in pain and looked back at the screen. The man was now red, as was its message: DON'T MAKE ME ANGRY, MICHAEL. I CAN DO MUCH WORSE THAN THIS! Then, the text scrolled: I'M GOING TO ASK ONE LAST TIME, HOW CAN I HELP WITH YOUR DATE?
I cried out in pain as the heat felt like it was only growing, spreading up my arm. In pure desperation, I cried out, "I JUST WANT US TO HAVE A GOOD TIME!"
Just as suddenly as the heat arrived, it vanished, being replaced with a cooling sensation that seemed to steal away the throbbing pain that was once there. I breathed a sigh of relief before glancing down at my watch with new message: SEE, WAS THAT SO HARD?
It left me alone for the rest of the date, and we did genuinely have a great time. During the date I almost felt more confident, more likable. And I could tell by that smile in her eyes that she was enjoying her time as well.
Before we knew it, the hours melted away as time felt so still for us. I didn't want tonight to end. But eventually, it had to.
And as I waved goodbye to her, I noticed the watch on her hand. There was a familiar face on it. I could barely make out the words: SEE YOU SOON!

01 "A Monstrous Storm"

The shadows crept in through the window is the dark clouds overtook the mid-afternoon sky. A feeling of dread and hopelessness flooded me, tying my stomach into a knot. Looking at the clouds, I saw a streak of purple lightning streaking across the sky until it crashed down somewhere along the skyline with a thunderous boom, followed shortly by the ground rumbling beneath my feet. It was jarring. what started as a regular summer afternoon was quickly turning into something dreadful. The nearby trees were all swaying lightly in the breeze as rain gradually started pouring down, eventually creating a curtain of turrential downpour that threatened to flood the streets. Another flash of light followed by another thunderous boom forced me to look away from the window. It was becoming far too real for me. The oncoming storm was becoming too much to bear. I walked back into my bedroom and sat in front of my television. There was a news guy standing before a weather map. He was po...

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"Tapping"

T here are some things we are all afraid of, whether or not we choose to admit it to ourselves. Perhaps you feel that the ocean is a safe place, yet when you arrive you find yourself fearing what may be swimming below you. What brushed up against your leg? Can they feel you trembling? Can they smell your fear? There I lay, in bed in an attempt to fall asleep. My television was sitting at a low volume as to not awaken me by surprise as I drift to sleep. I've had the unpleasant experience before. Tonight, I turned to my side, facing away from the harsh light of the television, yet still able to make out almost perfectly what they were saying. What was on right now was a couple arguing in a sitcom. I didn't care much for what they were saying, but the roar of the laugh track after every line or two was somewhat soothing to me. I was so close to drifting to sleep, when across the room there came a tapping on my window. I sat up and turned toward the window. It was pitch black...
