"Rearview"

There's nothing I love more than that new car smell. I was on the highway after just leaving the dealership. It was a long and tedious process, but I was finally the proud owner of a new car. Well, it was the model from about two years ago, but I was happy about it all the same. And it didn't cost a ton of money either.
It didn't take me any more than about five minutes to get home. I pulled into the driveway in front of my apartment building and turned off the car. I sat with it for a few minutes, looking through all the compartments and exploring all the cool features and stuff it had built into it. My previous car was one from about twenty years ago, so the fanciest that one got was a radio and a CD player.
After the satisfaction wore off, I got out of the car and locked it. I admired it from the outside as I made my way to the front door and walked into my apartment.
I got comfortable on the couch, throwing off my shoes, and turning on the TV. There was some animal documentary on. I wasn't sure why, as I was never into those kinds of shows. I changed the channel, mindlessly scrolling through. There wasn't really a lot I wanted to watch.
It didn't take long for me to doze off, remote in hand. I guess it had been a more exhausting day than I'd thought. As I slept, I dreamt that I was in my new car, cruising down the highway. There was a semi-truck heading straight for me. I tried weaving and dodging, trying to miss it, but it just sped toward me, trying to hit me straight on.
I was awakened by the sound of a car alarm going off. I jumped up from my couch in a panic and opened my front door. Was someone already trying to break into my car? I noticed my car lights weren't blinking, so it wasn't my car. Shortly after, the sound stopped, letting me breathe a sigh of relief.

The next day, I was heading out to work. I crawled into my car and turned the key, a smile spreading across my face as the engine roared smoothly to life. I checked behind me as I pulled out. Then I shifted gears, and by that I mean took it out of reverse, and I headed to work in my new ride.
As I got out on the highway, there wasn't anything out of the ordinary. That was, until I saw something in my rearview mirror. It was that same semi from my dream. It was red with lights shining directly at me. It was the middle of the day, so why did it have on its headlights?
I turned my head to look out the back window, but it was nowhere to be seen. Just the usual traffic.
I looked back at my rearview mirror and it was there once again, directly behind me, and getting closer. Was it trying to hit me?
Looking to the side windows, I took a peak behind me and I still saw that same truck. It was getting so close now, nearly hitting my bumper. What was this guy's problem?
I looked out the back window but it wasn't there. What the hell was happening? Am I losing my mind? Was the new car playing some twisted tricks on me?
Just then, I jolted forward as something smacked hard into the back of my car. I started swerving, leaving the cars on either lane honking at me. I tried to steady myself, to regain control and drive a bit faster to get away from this truck.
I looked to the rearview mirror again and the truck was speeding up, getting ready to hit me again. This time, I swerved into the next lane, which was thankfully clear.
I then stared in horror as the car that was once in front of me was now jolting forward violently as if an invisible force was ramming into the back of it. The car jolted again and flipped. I had to pull over. I didn't feel safe on this road. I pulled off to the shoulder, cars whizzing past me. Each of them slamming into something they couldn't see. Cars flipping and glass crunching and breaks slamming. All for the biggest car pile-up I'd ever seen...

01 "A Monstrous Storm"

The shadows crept in through the window is the dark clouds overtook the mid-afternoon sky. A feeling of dread and hopelessness flooded me, tying my stomach into a knot. Looking at the clouds, I saw a streak of purple lightning streaking across the sky until it crashed down somewhere along the skyline with a thunderous boom, followed shortly by the ground rumbling beneath my feet. It was jarring. what started as a regular summer afternoon was quickly turning into something dreadful. The nearby trees were all swaying lightly in the breeze as rain gradually started pouring down, eventually creating a curtain of turrential downpour that threatened to flood the streets. Another flash of light followed by another thunderous boom forced me to look away from the window. It was becoming far too real for me. The oncoming storm was becoming too much to bear. I walked back into my bedroom and sat in front of my television. There was a news guy standing before a weather map. He was po...

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"Tapping"

T here are some things we are all afraid of, whether or not we choose to admit it to ourselves. Perhaps you feel that the ocean is a safe place, yet when you arrive you find yourself fearing what may be swimming below you. What brushed up against your leg? Can they feel you trembling? Can they smell your fear? There I lay, in bed in an attempt to fall asleep. My television was sitting at a low volume as to not awaken me by surprise as I drift to sleep. I've had the unpleasant experience before. Tonight, I turned to my side, facing away from the harsh light of the television, yet still able to make out almost perfectly what they were saying. What was on right now was a couple arguing in a sitcom. I didn't care much for what they were saying, but the roar of the laugh track after every line or two was somewhat soothing to me. I was so close to drifting to sleep, when across the room there came a tapping on my window. I sat up and turned toward the window. It was pitch black...
