"Man vs Captors"

Love is something that is often misunderstood. Some view it as something between two people in a relationship. Others see it as caring about those closest to them. But sometimes, the real love is the one thing that makes us truly human. Without it, what are we?

It's been several years since the disaster started. And I'm still in hiding, hoping that eventually the war would come to its end. The war against us and the machines.
Now, I know what you're thinking, this all sounds a little familiar, and I wouldn't blame you for believing so. But this story is one far different from what you'd think.
See, a few years ago, Ai was reaching a point where it was getting smarter, its intelligence growing at an exponential rate. It was reaching a point where they were giving it bodies and putting it into machines. Deadly machines.
At the same time this was going on, the government was cracking down on immigration, trying to crack down and finding people in the country illegally and getting them back to where they came from. But after a certain point they overstepped a bit and cracked down on people that didn't seem like they were from here, whether or not they were here legally. Some called it racism. Others called it necessary.
But as the immigration crackdown pressed on, the government got a hold of these Ai machines and programed them to find people based on their lineage and how far back the bloodline was to who came here legally. They said it was to make sure that people's parents or grandparents were here legally before they started their family. Others saw through their lies. They knew it was still based on racism and they weren't fans of it.
They started kicking people out of the country based on nationality, on accents, on skin tone. There were extended days of protest, of people fighting back against the government, against these machines, but it was no use. The machines were winning.
Then, the country was left with only white people. It was painful and disheartening to know that we were only here because of what we looked like. Because we were lucky to be born in the skin that we did. It was unfair to the others. To the people forcefully removed because they looked different.
Though many were sad and torn apart, the select few that wanted this were celebrating. For a short time, that was.
You see, nobody ever turned the Ai robots off. Nobody told them to stop searching back ancestry and taking people whose generational ancestors were born in other countries. And they were beginning with the Europeans. The settlers from long ago.
I guess I should explain to those who might be in the dark about this. This specific country that all of these white people so proudly inhabit, the land wasn't originally theirs. It never really belonged to them. It was stolen from under the feet of the people who lived here and settled here several hundreds of years earlier.
The Ai had learned this information, and according to its programming, started removing people who's ancestors originated from Germany, England, Iceland, France, Netherlands. Anywhere and everywhere that their original ancestors who settled here all those centuries ago had come from.
Tons of people weren't having it, turning guns and weapons against these machines. Driving their vehicles into them, using explosives to blow them up. But the more that were destroyed, even more spawned in to fight against them even harder.
It was hard to peak outside and see all those people dead. The land almost baren other than the small group that decided to keep going to war against these machines. I wasn't the only person in hiding either. It seemed like that was the only way to keep from being spotted. From being taken. Stay unproblematic and you'll be fine, right?

01 "A Monstrous Storm"

The shadows crept in through the window is the dark clouds overtook the mid-afternoon sky. A feeling of dread and hopelessness flooded me, tying my stomach into a knot. Looking at the clouds, I saw a streak of purple lightning streaking across the sky until it crashed down somewhere along the skyline with a thunderous boom, followed shortly by the ground rumbling beneath my feet. It was jarring. what started as a regular summer afternoon was quickly turning into something dreadful. The nearby trees were all swaying lightly in the breeze as rain gradually started pouring down, eventually creating a curtain of turrential downpour that threatened to flood the streets. Another flash of light followed by another thunderous boom forced me to look away from the window. It was becoming far too real for me. The oncoming storm was becoming too much to bear. I walked back into my bedroom and sat in front of my television. There was a news guy standing before a weather map. He was po...

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"Tapping"

T here are some things we are all afraid of, whether or not we choose to admit it to ourselves. Perhaps you feel that the ocean is a safe place, yet when you arrive you find yourself fearing what may be swimming below you. What brushed up against your leg? Can they feel you trembling? Can they smell your fear? There I lay, in bed in an attempt to fall asleep. My television was sitting at a low volume as to not awaken me by surprise as I drift to sleep. I've had the unpleasant experience before. Tonight, I turned to my side, facing away from the harsh light of the television, yet still able to make out almost perfectly what they were saying. What was on right now was a couple arguing in a sitcom. I didn't care much for what they were saying, but the roar of the laugh track after every line or two was somewhat soothing to me. I was so close to drifting to sleep, when across the room there came a tapping on my window. I sat up and turned toward the window. It was pitch black...
