07 "Branching Caves"

My van slowed to a stop as we pulled up to the mountain. My boyfriend and I had been looking forward to this trip for a while and now that we were here I could feel the excitement bubbling up inside me. It felt like I was ready to burst.
My boyfriend James took the key out of the ignition, his gaze unbreaking from the tall grassy mountain in the distance. He turned to me with a smirk, seeing how excited I was.
"Are you ready to explore some caves?" he asked.
I let out a sigh, smiled at him in a way that screamed, "Did you really just ask me that?"
We climbed out of the van and headed to the back. I opened the back door and we grabbed our bags. He grabbed his flashlight an clicked it a few times. "You can never be too careful," he said.
I closed the back door and we headed down the gravel path through the ankle-high grass and vegetation as we made our way to the cave opening on the side of the mountain. As we walk, he and I talked about what we might find in there. Since you might not be as familiar with these caves, let me give you a rundown.
This place was called The Grivation of Honico. Supposedly this place was haunted. Some kids back in the 70's went inside and went missing for 17 days. When they came back, supposedly the kids looked older. Their hair had grown out like they'd been away from society for years. They were returned home and claimed that there was a branching cave system that looked different from the rest. They all went there and the wall sealed up behind them. They walked around for days but couldn't find a way out. They said they saw some weird stuff like aliens or monsters or something but nobody ever really believes those stories, right?
My boyfriend, James and I had been told that story by our parents, kind of as a tradition in this part of the state. Its a local legend. They say if you find that part of the cave, to run. Some people think it connects to another world and if it opens again, something might escape from it. Of course all of it sounded so made up. I mean, how does a cave just branch off and then disappear? It only happens in the movies.
As we stepped inside the cave, James and I grabbed our flashlights and shone them around the cave walls. The stone walls were a grey, almost black color. The air felt so much colder than before and there was this faint dripping sound that seemed to echo all around us. It had been so long since the last time I was anywhere near a cave. it felt surreal, like i was stepping into another world.
I followed James as we ventured further inside. There were small puddles of water here and there, making the ground a little slick. Thankfully we wore some slick-proof boots, otherwise we'd be falling all over the place.
Eventually we made it so far into the cave that, looking back, the light from the entrance was nonexistent. I turned back to James but jumped when he was staring right at me. I looked up to meet his gaze but he was looking past me. I turned to see what he was looking at and I was in shock. It was a tunnel. How had we passed it? Surely it wasn't there the whole time, right? And the walls to this tunnel seemed to glow red against the blues and greys that the cave we were in shone.
James walked slowly toward it and I followed close behind. We slowly walked into the tunnel, our hands against the stone wall to steady ourselves. The wall's texture felt different. The cave's walls felt like cool, smooth stone. The tunnel's walls felt dryer, rougher, warmer. It felt like the tunnel was alive.
We continued down the tunnel, letting our curiosity get the better of us. As we further walked, the tunnel seemed to wind, to take different turns, the walls growing a deeper, darker red. I pressed my hand against the wall again. It was no longer rough and dry. Now, it was wet. I removed my hand from the wall and gazed down at it with my flashlight. It looked like there was red pain on my hand. I wiped it off on my pants and kept moving forward, the air growing hotter and muggier.
Finally, it seemed like we were stepping into a much wider opening of the cave. The air was hot and muggy and there looked to be water on the ground. I didn't trust it, but we had to move forward. We stepped into the water and heard hissing. It felt like my foot was moving closer to the ground than it was before. Within a few moments, my foot grew hotter and hotter until I felt something touch my skin that made it burn like crazy! I jumped back to the dry ground and looked down at my shoe. It looked like it had been melted. What the hell was happening?
I shone my flashlight around to the walls of this cave opening. To my horror, the walls looked like they were pulsating. I called out to James but heard nothing. I shone my flashlight around the room but he was nowhere in sight.
At this point I was absolutely terrified as the truth of my reality set in. I knew exactly what this cave was. It was anything but a cave. And I was all alone. And within a few minutes, I too would meet the same fate as James.

01 "A Monstrous Storm"

The shadows crept in through the window is the dark clouds overtook the mid-afternoon sky. A feeling of dread and hopelessness flooded me, tying my stomach into a knot. Looking at the clouds, I saw a streak of purple lightning streaking across the sky until it crashed down somewhere along the skyline with a thunderous boom, followed shortly by the ground rumbling beneath my feet. It was jarring. what started as a regular summer afternoon was quickly turning into something dreadful. The nearby trees were all swaying lightly in the breeze as rain gradually started pouring down, eventually creating a curtain of turrential downpour that threatened to flood the streets. Another flash of light followed by another thunderous boom forced me to look away from the window. It was becoming far too real for me. The oncoming storm was becoming too much to bear. I walked back into my bedroom and sat in front of my television. There was a news guy standing before a weather map. He was po...

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"Tapping"

T here are some things we are all afraid of, whether or not we choose to admit it to ourselves. Perhaps you feel that the ocean is a safe place, yet when you arrive you find yourself fearing what may be swimming below you. What brushed up against your leg? Can they feel you trembling? Can they smell your fear? There I lay, in bed in an attempt to fall asleep. My television was sitting at a low volume as to not awaken me by surprise as I drift to sleep. I've had the unpleasant experience before. Tonight, I turned to my side, facing away from the harsh light of the television, yet still able to make out almost perfectly what they were saying. What was on right now was a couple arguing in a sitcom. I didn't care much for what they were saying, but the roar of the laugh track after every line or two was somewhat soothing to me. I was so close to drifting to sleep, when across the room there came a tapping on my window. I sat up and turned toward the window. It was pitch black...
