"The Abandoned Asylum"

Have you ever explored an abandoned building? Did the loose tiles dangling from the ceiling and the lingering odor that you can't quite place throw you off? Did you ever feel a pair of eyes on you, though you knew there was nobody around? Does this sound like a place that might fill you with dread? Then perhaps you've come to the right story. Sit back and keep your eyes peeled in... The Asylum.

My friend and I had been on the road for a while, exploring as many abandoned buildings as we could, in hopes of catching a real-life haunting on camera. We'd been at it for a few months now and have yet to find anything of substance. However, we had never had the kind of opportunity we were about to have.
While our last trip, just two days ago, was another bust, we had received a message about an abandoned insane asylum, just a few hundred miles north of where we were. My friend, Joe, and I were excited. No longer were we exploring decrepit homes. We were moving up in the world.
One thing I seemed to have forgotten to mention was that we were running a youtube channel on top of this. We consider ourselves Up-and-Coming in the 'Paranormal Investigators' community. And typically what we'll do is rig the abandoned place up with a few scares of our own if what we find is a dud. It's what we had to do at the place we were just leaving. I have my hopes high for the day that the rigging is no longer required.
It was nightfall before we finally pulled up to the abandoned asylum. It was just as you'd imagine it in those horror movies. It was a tall, white building that was surrounded by fencing that was at least twice my height. There were a few trees in the plentiful grassy area between the fence and the building. On the fence was a bunch of yellow tape with black lettering that warned trespassers to stay away. I simply rolled my eyes. I can't tell you how many of them we've ignored on the doors of the homes we'd go into. It's abandoned, nobody is paying attention to it anymore.
Joe and I got out of the van and made our way to the back. We opened the back doors and I crawled inside, sitting before a set of monitors and throwing on a headset. I saw Joe grab a camera, and a few other small gadgets before throwing on his headset. He let out a sigh as he sat everything down that had been in his hands. He was having second thoughts, I figured.
"So, what ghost am I calling out for again?" he asked, a disgruntled look on his face.
"The lady that sent me the message said that there's a ghost here named Elizabeth Jane," I explained. "Apparently, her ex-husband worked for the institution and submitted her as being a schizophrenic so that he could torment her for breaking his heart. According to the story, he zapped her brain so much that they completely cooked it. She's said to be trailing the halls, awaiting her ex-husband's return."
"They really couldn't have picked a more generic-sounding name, huh?" Joe scoffed. He turned the mic of his headset on. "Are we good?"
I shot him a thumbs up and he gathered everything and headed into the building.

He had about three tripods with cameras to set up. I watched the monitors to make sure he had good angles on each one. He then grabbed his own camera, as well as a thermal monitor to ensure he captured everything he was faced with. I could hear him breathing heavily, slowly making his way down the decrepit hallways. The hallways were dark, save for the light from the camera that he carried with him. Lucky for me, the camera picked up night vision, allowing me to guide him as he navigated the building.
I heard him calling out to the spirit of Elizabeth Jane before pausing and waving the camera from side to side in hopes of picking anything up. Unfortunately, there was nothing.
I nearly jumped when I heard a knock on the side of my van. I muted the mic on my headset and crawled into the front seat. There, I saw a cop knocking on the side of the van. I opened the front door and stepped outside. We'd been caught.
"Can you tell me why you're parked outside of a private property building in a suspicious-looking vehicle at this time of night?" the cop asked, raising an eyebrow as if to seem intimidating.
"I'm sorry officer," I started, trying to formulate a lie in my head as quickly as I could. "I was just cruising and I stopped here because I thought I saw someone waving at me from the window up there." I pointed and the officer reluctantly followed my finger. He turned back to me and narrowed his eyes.
"That can't be possible, that place has been abandoned for more years than I can remember," he said. "Unless you're seeing ghosts, you must be mistakin'."
I tried talking to the officer a little bit more about the place, hoping to gather some insight from the locals. As I talked, I noticed Joe trying to talk to me over the headset. Unfortunately, there was no way for me to respond without getting caught.
I began feeling a little nervous when he started begging me to guide him. I had completely forgotten that he barely has any light in there. I had to end the conversation with the cop and get back inside the van.
Then, I heard a sound that made my blood run cold. It was a female voice. It was hard to make anything out, but I could hear it over the headset nonetheless. Had he found the ghost? I think I heard him say that he was going to follow the voice. I was excited and terrified at the same time. We had finally captured a ghost! We had the proof that they exist!
Finally, the cop left and allowed me back into my van. Granted I had to start it up so he thought I was leaving, before taking off himself. Getting back to the monitors, I noticed he was heading straight for an empty elevator shaft. The ghost was leading him straight to it. Could he not tell? Maybe he thought he was about to walk into a room.
I scrambled to turn my mic back on. I had to warn him! But the damn thing wouldn't work!
My blood ran cold as I heard his screams echoing through the abandoned elevator shaft.

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"The Snake Tattoo"

T attoos, a work of art displayed on the skin that helps represent the person wearing it. The designs may be interesting, the images fascinating. Pain brought about to ensure success from the artist. But not all tattoos are kind, some bite back at the wearer. Some leave an unwanted scar wrapped in torment. What is one to do when the tattoo fights back? Getting a tattoo for my nineteenth birthday was supposed to be a gift from my best friend. She overheard me say I wanted one and insisted on paying. I was terrified of the needle they'd use on me, making me even more hesitant to going. She continued pushing me toward it, her main excuse being that she already paid for it. Why must she surprise me with such torment? After arriving at the tattoo shop, the man behind the desk asked for our names. Upon seeing we already paid, he asked me what I wanted. Of course, I was nervous as all hell. I looked over to my friend, Jen, for she knew exactly what I wanted. She took out her phone a...

01 "A Monstrous Storm"

The shadows crept in through the window is the dark clouds overtook the mid-afternoon sky. A feeling of dread and hopelessness flooded me, tying my stomach into a knot. Looking at the clouds, I saw a streak of purple lightning streaking across the sky until it crashed down somewhere along the skyline with a thunderous boom, followed shortly by the ground rumbling beneath my feet. It was jarring. what started as a regular summer afternoon was quickly turning into something dreadful. The nearby trees were all swaying lightly in the breeze as rain gradually started pouring down, eventually creating a curtain of turrential downpour that threatened to flood the streets. Another flash of light followed by another thunderous boom forced me to look away from the window. It was becoming far too real for me. The oncoming storm was becoming too much to bear. I walked back into my bedroom and sat in front of my television. There was a news guy standing before a weather map. He was po...
