How many times have you been pranked by a sibling or a friend? Pulling so many jokes on you that you never know if you should take them seriously or not. Tonight's story, their disbelief cost them more than they ever dreamed.
"You kids, behave," my mom said as she and dad left for their date. I was a little sad about them leaving but not as scared as I was that they were letting my older sister, Amy in charge. Amy and my older brother, Caleb, like pulling mean jokes on me, if you can call them jokes.
There was the day a few weeks ago where they 'accidentally' put my favorite stuffed animal in the blender so they could see what would happen. Sure, they got grounded for it, but that doesn't stop them from continuing to be mean to me. I had a strong feeling tonight wasn't going to be much different.
I snuck away to my room after my parents left, hoping my brother and sister wouldn't notice me. Of course, the moment I get to my room, I hear footsteps not too far behind my own. I turn around to see Caleb come stomping through the door. "Where do you think you're going, you little booger?" he taunted me. "We found the cookie stash in the kitchen, come have a look."
I was confused for a moment. Was this one of the rare occasions he was trying to be nice to me? I was a little skeptical but I followed him into the kitchen. Just as we made it to the doorway, the power went out, making me scream. I was frozen, unmoving for fear of what might be hiding in the darkness.
"I think the Shock-Lifter just came by," I could hear Caleb saying somewhere in front of me.
"Who's that?" I asked, feeling around to find the kitchen table so I could hide under it.
"You don't know?" he sounded surprised. "There was this guy named Johnny. One day out of boredom, he put a paperclip in an electric socket. It nearly shocked his brains out. His parents went to check on him and he was somehow alive. There was something that changed about him that day though. Whenever he was angry, the power would go out."
"Okay, that doesn't even sound real," I said. "Second of all, why would he be angry at us, since he apparently made our power go out?"
"I don't know," he shot back. "Maybe he saw your face through the window and it enraged him. Can you blame him?"
"I hate you." I said. If I knew where he was I would've hit him. Finally, I found the table and swiftly made my way beneath it. My vision was starting to come back to me, making out slight shadows with a dim blue light making things just barely visible. I scooted around under the table until I could see the basement door. Was it moving?
"Caleb look out!" I shouted as the door flung open. The lights flicked back on in an instant, almost blinding me. I couldn't see much, just the legs of the people walking around. I saw Caleb and another pair of legs approaching his. I stayed as quiet as I could, holding my breath. My heart was racing as I saw them starting to approach the table. Amy poked her head down to see me and made me jump.
I crawled out from under the table, only to have both of them laughing in my face. "We got you good," I could hear Caleb saying. It almost doesn't surprise me at this point. I was sick of the doing everything they could think of to bully me. "I'm telling mom," I said before stomping off to my room.
"Of course you would," Amy said. "That's why you're not fun to hang around with." I slammed the door behind me, jumped into my bed, and cried.
Sobbing for a few minutes, being alone with my thoughts, all I could think was I wanted to get them back. I wanted to hurt them and scare them the same way they did me. I didn't know how, maybe with some luck, someday, something might work in my favor.
There was a knock on my door. Great, they're going to try messing with me again. "Go away," I shouted.
I heard the door open and I lifted my head from the pillow, dried tears stuck to my cheeks. It was Amy. "What do you want?" I asked, wiping my face.
"I wanted to apologize for the joke we pulled," she said. "We don't mean to be as harsh as we are, it's just that you're an easy target. Besides, if I tried anything like that on Caleb he might beat me up." That made us chuckle a little. "If you tell mom and dad about that, leave me out of it please. I have a party I'm going to tomorrow and I can't afford not to go."
"Only if you promise not to prank me again tonight," I said. She nodded and smiled. She gave me a hug and left my room.
Just as she left, Caleb came in. "What was all that about?" he asked, picking a small foam ball, tossing it up, and catching it with his other hand. "Couldn't handle a little joke?"
"It's not just about the joke," I said. "It's that you're always bullying me. I hate it."
"You don't have to be such a booger," he shot back. "We only ever prank you because if I tried doing anything like that to Amy, she'd beat me up. You're an easier target anyway,"
He barely finished what he was saying before the power went out again. Instead of screaming, this time I rolled my eyes and grabbed my phone from my nightstand. "Do you really think this is going to get me again?"
"I don't know anything about this, I swear," he said, a little hint of fear in his eyes. I would believe him but he was the only one with me last time this happened. I can't believe my sister would come up and apologize, only to betray me and try pranking me again. I was furious. I made my way to the kitchen and went to the basement. I figured I would have been greeted by Amy but she was nowhere to be found. I looked around with my flashlight until I found the grey box in the wall. I flipped the big switch on the very top and heard a few clicks. The power must have come back on. The instant I turned to go back up the stairs, I heard a bloodcurdling scream. Was that Caleb?
I ran up the stairs and raced to my room. He lay still on the floor, a paperclip in his hand, plugged straight into the outlet.
