Have you ever been in love, only for it to end in heartbreak as they leave their eyes lingering on another? What was that feeling you had inside, did you feel hollow, like you could have done better? Do you feel incredible jealousy and rage toward the person you lost them to? What would you do if you could get your perfect revenge?
The restaurant was filled with the rambles of a sea of varying voices. No one voice above enough to make out from the rest. I sat quietly in my seat, looking over the menu, trying to decide what I was going to have for dinner with my girlfriend, whenever she shows up. I know, it's a twisted little surprise I have instore for her. I hadn't exactly told her I'd be here. I overheard her on the phone the other night that she was going to meet here with a friend. Admittedly, it did feel a little weird to show up to a get together unannounced, but it was our anniversary. We'd been together for a year to the date.
I texted her to throw her off the scent of my being here, "Do you wanna hang out today?"
Almost at an instant, she messaged me back, "I would but I'm busy today. Maybe tomorrow?"
I never really know how to respond to texts most of the time, so I didn't message back. Instead, I looked around the restaurant. I was lucky enough to have my seat in the perfect spot to face the front door to the restaurant. There, I could see when she walks through the door so I can walk up and surprise her.
I looked over the menu one last time, deciding what I wanted. Their signature burger with jalapenos and BBQ sauce. I was always a sucker for the spice.
Setting my menu down on the table, I glanced up in time to see my girlfriend. She was beautiful with her hair up in a blonde bun. Her blue eyes shimmering as the light from the interior stuck them. Why was she wearing a dress? This isn't exactly a fancy restaurant. Who was she planning to meet here, I thought this was a casual night with her friends. I immediately got my answer when a man came in behind her in a red flannel and his brown hair combed back. Who was this?
I wanted to go up and ask her what was going on, but I knew I didn't want her to know I was here.
I must have looked pretty upset, as I was approached by a man. He pulled up the chair across from me and sat down.
"Who the hell are you?" I demanded.
"I mean you no harm, I just want to talk," the man said. He was skinny with thinning dark hair and green eyes. The way he moved and spoke was almost snake-like. I didn't want to listen to him, but the way he spoke intrigued me.
"There's nothing to talk about," I said, looking back toward my girlfriend, who was sitting down at a table, laughing with the guy I despised. The guy sitting with me followed my gaze.
"How heartbreaking," he said in his almost raspy voice. "The one you love enjoying the company of another. I can't imagine how upset you must feel."
"I really don't want to talk about it," I said, turning back to him. "Especially not to someone I don't even know." I tried luring him to introducing himself, but it seemed he wasn't biting. What was his deal?
"I want to offer you a deal," he leaned close and looked me dead in my eyes, his hot breath burning my nostrils, but for some strange reason I couldn't pull away. "Do you want to let live the person responsible for breaking your relationship apart and ignore everything you saw tonight, or do you want her back with the man's plug pulled early?"
He wasn't saying what I think he was, right? He doesn't know me, why would he help me out? I had to think about this. Could I really ignore the situation in front of me and carry the relationship on, knowing she's cheating? And what does he mean by pulling the plug? He couldn't really mean killing him, could he? I had to be sure.
"Get rid of him," I said. I immediately covered my mouth. Had I really said that? I meant to ask him to elaborate. I couldn't bring myself to say anything else as I watched him stand up and leave the building. What was he going to do?
No longer was I upset with my girlfriend, I was more paranoid that any moment disaster would strike. And for about an hour, everything carried on like normal. I ended up sneaking out and making it home before she did.
I asked her to come by when she was free. She agreed and I waited. Finally, after nearly two hours of waiting, she came to my front door, still wearing what she had on earlier. She looked beautiful.
I asked her to sit down next to me on the couch and she did. "Where were you tonight," I asked.
"I was out with my brother," she said. "I know you were there, I saw you. I was going to say hi and introduce you but you left before I could."
She most have seen the look of shock on my face because she followed up with, "I know, I should have told you I was hanging out with him. We hadn't seen each other for so long."
I was at a loss for words. What was I supposed to say to this? And most importantly, what was the man at the restaurant going to do to her brother?
