"Who's There?"

Hearing a sound in the darkness, you go to investigate. Is there a monster looming through your home, there to pay you a terrifying visit? Lights flickering and the noise gets closer. You have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. It waits for the right moment before the beast pounces and you find yourself face to face with death.

I was finishing the last few minutes of my show on the History channel. The idea of real vampires existing in some sense was so interesting to me. I let out a yawn and felt my eyelids growing heavy. Was it really so close to midnight? I glanced over at the clock, fifteen minutes after.
As the show was on commercial, I stood from the couch, my bones cracking slightly from the first stretch of the evening. There's no way I'd been sitting for that long, I thought.
I made my way to the kitchen to find my dog whining. I looked over and saw his food bowl was nearly empty, a few pieces remaining. I shook my head, a smile plastered on my face as I grabbed the bag of dog food and filled his bowl up. His tail wagged as he made his way over and jammed his face into it, chugging it all down like it was a contest.
I returned to my television to find the credits rolling on my show. I missed the tail end of it. I sighed and shrugged, if there were any more of it, I'm certain I would have fallen asleep on the couch. I turned the TV off and made my way to my bedroom, turning the lights off along the way.
Sliding my shoes off, I crawled into bed. I brought my covers over me and turned to lay on my side. Blanketed in warmth as if a hug was bestowed upon me and causing me to sink further into my own comfort.

I was forced awake by a whistling noise coming from somewhere in my house. I sat up and looked around. Was it something from my dream? No, it had to have been real. Why was my dog not barking at it? He always barks when he hears a noise. It's one of his annoying little quirks.
I decided I might as well investigate. I gripped my bat I had beside my bed and squeezed it tightly as I crept out of bed and made my way down the hall and into the living room. I turned on the lights and looked around to find nothing out of the ordinary. I let out a sigh of relief, it must have all been a part of my dream.
As I turned toward the lights to turn them off, I saw the faint outline of a face outside of my sliding glass back door. I made my way over to it and stepped outside. I took out my phone and turned on the flashlight. I shown the light around to find nothing out of the ordinary. I looked around once more for good measure before making my way back inside.
I rubbed my eyes. Was I going mad? Why was I seeing and hearing things that clearly weren't there?
The sudden lights going out startled me, my heart almost jumping out of my chest. I turned the flashlight on my phone back on and looked around to find nothing but my empty home. I turned my attention to the back door as it slowly started sliding open. I saw nobody behind the glass, even with shining my light in that direction.
When the door was open enough, I heard the quick scurrying of footsteps taking off toward the kitchen. I crept over and shut the back door before following the footsteps to the kitchen. I shone my flashlight around and couldn't believe it. More nothing. I must be losing my mind at this point. But there's no way, the lights wouldn't have gone out if it was just hallucinations. Perhaps I was still dreaming?
I felt hot breath on the back of my neck. Slowly, I turned around to find a monster staring back at me. I shown my light at it. It opened its mouth, revealing rows and rows of razor sharp teeth. It began to lunge forward as if it was about to eat me.
The sound of familiar whistling cut the creature short. It turned its attention to the sound before taking off out the back door in fear.
The monster wasn't scurrying around like I'd heard earlier. Where was the whistling coming from? I tried following it, cautious this time as I knew it might be another monster.
I shown my flashlight on the floor as I walked and was mortified to find the dead body of my dog, lying in a pool of his own blood. I got down on my knees, sadness consuming me. My best friend had been killed.
As I mourned his death, I couldn't help but think, what kind of monster could have done this? Better question, what kind of monster would make another monster run away in fear?

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"The Light"

My day off from work was supposed to be a day for me to relax and unwind and rest. The past few days had been incredibly stressful, from hateful customers to managers that expected everyone to do their jobs for them, and everything in between. It was nice to finally have that down time to spend away from all that. I'd decided to spend my time, not to get things done around the house, but to play a new game I'd been hooked on lately. It was this puzzle game where every room is seemingly randomly generated, each with clean and clever puzzles. After booting up the game, I was presented a room with white padded tiles all over the walls. There were a few green, red, and blue squares. I guess my job was to manipulate those tiles somehow to get me from where I was no, up to the top of the level. I looked around the room and could barely make out an opening. I pressed a single button to get myself started when the light in my bedroom burnt out, leaving me shrouded in darkness...

"Checkmate"

W hen my best friend and I got into a small disagreement, I didn't think all that much of it afterward. When he and I fought, it didn't really end in much besides us stepping away from each other for a few hours before reuniting as if nothing had previously taken place. I knew it meant we had a strong friendship. The argument we just had, however, was completely different from the small disagreements we usually had. Instead of it being about videogames of films, this one got a little personal. Pretty much, I had deeply judged the guy because he wasn't a fan of my speedrun tournament. He swore that I had agreed to hang out with him just before going live with my greatest world record speedrun attempt yet, one I had been spending three weeks practicing for. Before we went our separate ways, instead of wishing me luck or doing our usually angred goodbyes, he snickered at me, saying "Good luck with your stream." Before I could ask him what that was about, he left ...
