When someone mentions Egypt, what comes to mind? Perhaps the great Sphinx with the riddle to stump many. Or maybe you think of the mummies from horror movies that rise from the dead, scarabs by their side to assist you in joining them in the afterlife. Or you might imagine aliens from another world, assisting in helping put together the pyramids and being perceived as gods. But no matter what you see, it all lays dormant in the past or rests its head in fiction. At least that's what they want you to think.
The wind from the open world whipped against my face, making it difficult to keep my eyes open. My team and I were traveling in an open jeep as we raced to make it to the ancient pyramids of the Nile. We were a team of archeologist, sent to investigate everything in the pyramids, document them, and send all the information back to our group over in the states.
My friends, Joe and Nathan, sat up front, cracking jokes, whooping and hollering as we drove. I sat in the back with the only girl joining us. Her eyes were lit up with joy and determination, as were mine. We were given the opportunity that very few have, checking out things from an ancient civilization. For us, it was like being someone who heard about space as a kid and grew to be an astronaut.
I talked to Heather a little bit, asking her if she was nervous about where we were going.
"What is there to be nervous about?" she laughed. "This is something I've always dreamed of doing."
"But with how old they are, what if we set foot in there and the floor gives way?" I asked.
"The place has been around for hundreds or even thousands of years, if it were to collapse it would have by now," she assured me. "You have nothing to worry about."
I nodded and we continued our way to the pyramids. I wasn't really worried about the state of the place, I was nervous about going to a new place, far out in the middle of nowhere, and getting stranded. Or perhaps the mummies rising from their tombs like in the movies. In other words, I was afraid something bad was going to happen. I couldn't quite place my finger on it but something felt very wrong about this.
We parked just before the entrance. We climbed out of the car and grabbed our duffle bags, filled with everything we needed to take pictures and document our findings. Joe lead the way and everyone followed behind. Heather stood behind me as we walked in.
She must have seen how nervous I was, for she grabbed my shoulder, making me jump a little. "You'll be fine," she said calmly. She walked around me and turned back to look me in the eyes as extra assurance before jogging to catch up to the others. Had I been walking so slowly that I'd lost them?
I darted forward in the same direction Heather was going, but came up short. None of them were anywhere to be found. I shifted my flashlight from one side of the room to the other, but all I could see was a wide empty room. I found a doorway and followed through it. This is where they must have gone, I thought.
Walking into the next room, I shown my flashlight around. The light came back to meet me as it reflected off a wide array of golden mirrors. Some were hanging off the ceiling while others were plastered on the walls. I dropped my bag and pulled out my camera. I figured that before I catch up to them, I might as well get some photos of this room. I snapped a few pictures before a scream echoed through the room.
I jumped and nearly dropped my camera. I grabbed my flashlight and backed myself into the closest corner. Something was in here with me, I know it. I could hear footsteps approaching and quickly turned off my light. I didn't want it to find where I was. I didn't fear the darkness near as much as I did of what could be lurking in it.
I held my breath when I could hear someone breathing before me. I turned my light on. If I was going to die, now would be a better time than ever.
Standing before me was Heather. At least it looked like her. Her eyes were blood red and her clothes looked torn to shreds. She looked someone trying hard to look like her.
"What are you doing here?" she asked in a monotone voice, unblinking. "You are unwelcome."
"I'm just trying to catch up with my group. We got separated and-"
"Spare my the lies!" Her voice boomed. "You are here to seek out unearthed treasures, locked away by the tombs of the Pharaohs." She stepped closer to me. Was she smelling me? She drew back. "I know what it is you truly seek."
"I'm not looking for anything," I pleaded. "I'm here on a job with my group."
"Yes, your group," she nodded. "You seek to impress someone you are with. Heather?" She gestured to her form as she spoke her name. "You want to capture her heart by uncovering something great here. That is why you've come."
"That's not true, I-"
"Spare me your lies!" she shouted. "I can see into your soul and know the secrets you hide. I know the secret truth hidden within this place. You will find it in the next room." She pointed over to the far wall as she finished speaking. She then disappeared and blended into the shadows.
I don't know what the hell is going on here, but I'm leaving as soon as I see what's in this next room. I made my way over and walked through the doorway.
I was surrounded by sunlight, which caught me by surprise. Was I outside? I should be near the center of this pyramid, not near an exit.
I looked around and saw a mass group of people wearing old fashioned Egyptian clothing. Did I get sent to the past or something?
Zooming by over head was a spacecraft of some kind, like something you'd find in a sci-fi movie. There was a group of people carving out stones and a space craft lifted them and carried them over to the pyramid I was in. I looked up to find that the construction was almost done.
I watched in amazement and wonder as I saw the spacecraft gently lower the massive stone and place it carefully above me. I guess the conspiracy theorists were right, I chuckled.
I turned around to walk back into the building. There standing before me were three humanoid creatures, each dressed like members from my group. What the hell was this?
I looked up to meet their eyes. There was nothing I could do, nowhere I could run, as my feet were stuck to the ground below me. They each reached out for me.
The last thing I remember hearing was their chants, "Become one of us."
