The edge of the universe, a single man sits at a table. He is alone in the universe. Everyone else is gone by some strange occurrence. He is the last person alive. He sits in silence, contemplating whether or not to stay alive. Is there a point in trying to fight for life when there's nobody else around to reap the benefits? As the thoughts race and his hand reaches for the gun, a knock is heard at the door.
Being stuck in space wasn't the ideal place to be, especially not at the present moment. My partner, Darren and I, were sitting on the international space station, performing our routine maintenance work. We had been finished for a day or so, but without any communication from Earth, we assumed it would be best to stay until we get the okay to come back. After all, it was expensive to make these trips.
Darren and I kept ourselves busy by double checking everything to make sure it was all running smoothly. Then returning to base to talk about life and what all we want out of our futures. He planned on taking his kids to the zoo when he gets back, as his twins loved animals. As for myself, I didn't really have much plans. My life was mainly centered around space, there wasn't much room to develop a life of my own.
After a week had passed without a sign of communication, we figured it would be best to go back. After all, there might be something onboard that might require some work when we get back. We crawled onboard our rocket and set our course back to Earth.
It seemed to take days, but we'd finally made it, breaking through the Earth's atmosphere to come home. We were hoping we were going the right way to go back to our landing pad. However, upon returning to the planet there were no signs of life. Where had they all gone?
We were flying blind through the sky without a place to land, radio silence coming from the planet. We tried our hardest to land in the water. Somehow, we just made it in without a scratch. We were floating slightly above the water.
We made our way out of the ship and swam to the shore nearby. We made it finally to land. We lay flat on our backs for a few moments to catch our breath. There was nothing but silence behind us. It was almost like we had landed on some deserted island. It was bizarre.
I stood and looked over the beach. The boardwalk was visible through the thick blue fog. Strange, it was clearly the afternoon, yet it looked as though it was almost nightfall.
We walked out to meet the rest of the world. There wasn't even a single car on the street, not a single light on in the entire city. Where had everyone gone?
The curiosity, as well as the fear, loomed over our minds as we continued walk. We searched everywhere, knocking on doors, hollering and asking who was out there, yet no response.
We had been running around for hours in search of life but came up short. Not even a sound was made, leading us to any sort of life at all. Even the simplest animals seemed to have vanished.
We decided to settle down in a building and continue our search in the morning. We stepped inside the nearest building, a hotel. Darren stepped behind the counter and grabbed some keys out of a drawer. He handed me a couple and we made our way through to find a place to sleep.
The next morning, we were greeted by a strange buzzing sound. It sounded as though there was a lightbulb getting ready to burn out. We left our rooms and followed the noise to the front desk of the hotel. There sat a simple toaster, shiny and silver on the outside with a single lever in the middle to activate.
We got a laugh out of it. I knew there was someone out here messing with us.
The toaster's handle went down on its own with a click. There was a loud buzzing sound within as the coils inside heated with an orange glow. We started to chuckle until we felt this sharp pain running up and down our arms, traveling through our legs and our torsos.
It felt as though something was cooking our very flesh. I looked over and stared in horror as I saw Darren's skin boiling and bubbling. We were being cooked alive by some unseen force. All we could do was scream.
Finally, the toaster dinged and we fell over dead.
