Horror isn't often about jump scares, nor the monsters hiding beneath your bed. The true horrors in the world are the ones that are real, ones that can actually happen. It is the scary truth we don't like to think about. But just because you don't think about it, doesn't make it any less likely to come true.
Leading a life with a decent amount of money isn't always as good as it seems. Sure, it may absolutely have its good side, but it has some incredible drawbacks. For example, because you have more money doesn't mean you will suddenly gain more friends, nor more of a following of fans. Sure, you can buy some incredibly expensive things, it just won't end up making you happy in the end.
As for how I'm carrying myself? I have a group of people surrounding me, ones that come over and play some poker every few days, much like tonight.
We each took turns, putting our chips in. The one thing we do to make things interesting is playing with real money. Of course, we don't play with large amounts. We play using nothing more than $20 bills. Even though we are all rich, we aren't exactly fond of the idea of going bankrupt.
"Do you have any plans for tonight?" my friend, Bill, asked as he put in a card.
I shook my head. "Nah not tonight," I replied. "I do have a date tomorrow night though."
"Oh really, who with?" asked Bill.
"This woman I met at work," I said. "She has this beautiful smile and these amazing eyes and-"
"Okay bud," Bill laughed. "We get it, you're into her. Let's hope the takes on another meaning tomorrow night." he winked and my other friends let out an uproar of laughter. I just smirked and shook my head.
"Come on guys," I said. "I really like this girl."
We carried on playing some more until all the chips were over on my side. What can I say, I'm a natural at this game.
My friends all packed up and left, grabbing a drink on their way out. I stretched my arms and let out a yawn. I looked over at the clock and saw it was roughly seven hours before I needed to be at work. I hoped I had enough time to get to sleep so that I wake up well rested.
I tossed and turned in bed for what felt like an eternity. Perhaps I was too excited for my date to sleep. I glanced over at the clock. Only thirty minutes had passed. I got up from my bed and headed into my living room, grabbing a DVD on my way and popping it in the DVD Player. I pressed play and sat down on the couch.
As I sat through the commercials, I realized some popcorn would go pretty good with this. I started popping some popcorn and waited for it to finish. I could hear the music from the main menu blasting through my speakers. Why did they have to make the menu louder than anything else in the movie?
When the popcorn finished, I grabbed a bottle of water and sat down, pressing play. I grabbed a handful of popcorn and scarfed it all down.
I found myself lost in the film, paying no mind to the fly that had darted down my throat moments before putting more popcorn in my mouth. I began to choke. I coughed as much as I could, spitting up and much of the popcorn as I could.
I tried getting up but attempting to do so put a lot of pressure on my chest and made the coughing even more painful.
I realized in my final moments, what it truly meant to be rich yet alone. You have everything you want, but money can't buy away your loneliness.
