"Data Collection"

Trust in the government is something very few people have, whether it be the belief that the opposite party has rigged something against the other side, or they're doing something as a mass cover-up. No matter which way you roll the dice, there's always a reason the government isn't trusted. But the biggest twists coming from there have yet to come.

The world, our world, is falling apart. It has been for several years now. The people we live next to, the neighborhood of the world is crumbling before our very eyes. Anger fueled by misunderstandings because any attempt at communication is cut short by the other party refusing to listen, as they might have to go against what they believe and say they're wrong.
Some might say technology is the reason behind the cruelty. Being trapped in your own little world on your phone where your dreams can play out and only serving the things that make you happy. While you're lost in the sea of dopamine, you might find it difficult to wake back up to the real world and facing the problems presented before you.
Technology, that cursed invention. It's the reason I'm in this mess in the first place. But for you to understand why this is happening, you must first understand the most recent reveal, an announcement from varying social media platforms coming together for one single cause, to feed you extra-targeted content.
They recently revealed the question many had on their minds, what are these corporations using our data from ads for? After over ten years of sending you targeted ads and allowing their advanced systems to better track your data and gain information about you, they created extra-targeting. It is every social media ad and post you come across being filtered to ensure you get the best possible experience on their platform without sending you something that might be upsetting.
Now, with new technology comes the conspiracies. The targeted posts could, not only be to feed nothing but good and positive things to the consumer, it could also be used to fuel a political fire when election year comes. Bringing up things with the intent of sparking rage in the hearts of the red and blue sides.
Of course, they were right, the platforms can weaponize it. I know from experience.
There was a situation a few weeks back where the targeted posts that blinded people with satisfaction subsided and everyone was targeted an article about a man that killed his wife and kids. Some people's articles were incredibly biased and others heavily distorted the actual events. Each article targeted to the exact people they needed to so it would get the right reaction from them.
Unlike a solid chunk of the world that went straight to slandering and wishing death on him online, I decided to look into it. There has to be more to the story. They guy apparently used to be a good guy after all.
After digging through countless websites, I came across an article that told the exact story. According to police reports, the man was just getting out of the shower when he heard noises. He quickly got dressed and went to check it out. When he exited the bathroom, he saw his wife laying in a pool of her own blood. H raced to his kids rooms and they were laying on the ground as if they were a doll a kid threw in their closet, lifeless. The police barged into the house to see the man covered in blood, carrying one of his kids. Nobody could understand what he was saying.
After my little investigation, I decided to dig deeper. I looked into different articles from days before to see if anything they did might have lead to someone breaking in and killing the family. I was greeted with an ad on the side of my screen. It was a picture of me from high school. Below it was the line, 'Are you going to let this man defend a killer?'
I was taken aback. What was even going on? There's no way I'm the only person in America that thinks the guy is innocent. I closed my laptop and stepped aside to get ready for bed.
As I went to lay down, my parents barged into my room, each furious about what they had just read about me. They each lectured me and forced me to give a public apology. That's what this is supposed to be. I wasn't a fan of saying words I didn't mean, so this is my truth. If you don't believe it then I am truly sorry.

01 "A Monstrous Storm"

The shadows crept in through the window is the dark clouds overtook the mid-afternoon sky. A feeling of dread and hopelessness flooded me, tying my stomach into a knot. Looking at the clouds, I saw a streak of purple lightning streaking across the sky until it crashed down somewhere along the skyline with a thunderous boom, followed shortly by the ground rumbling beneath my feet. It was jarring. what started as a regular summer afternoon was quickly turning into something dreadful. The nearby trees were all swaying lightly in the breeze as rain gradually started pouring down, eventually creating a curtain of turrential downpour that threatened to flood the streets. Another flash of light followed by another thunderous boom forced me to look away from the window. It was becoming far too real for me. The oncoming storm was becoming too much to bear. I walked back into my bedroom and sat in front of my television. There was a news guy standing before a weather map. He was po...

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"Tapping"

T here are some things we are all afraid of, whether or not we choose to admit it to ourselves. Perhaps you feel that the ocean is a safe place, yet when you arrive you find yourself fearing what may be swimming below you. What brushed up against your leg? Can they feel you trembling? Can they smell your fear? There I lay, in bed in an attempt to fall asleep. My television was sitting at a low volume as to not awaken me by surprise as I drift to sleep. I've had the unpleasant experience before. Tonight, I turned to my side, facing away from the harsh light of the television, yet still able to make out almost perfectly what they were saying. What was on right now was a couple arguing in a sitcom. I didn't care much for what they were saying, but the roar of the laugh track after every line or two was somewhat soothing to me. I was so close to drifting to sleep, when across the room there came a tapping on my window. I sat up and turned toward the window. It was pitch black...
