"Darkest Desire"

Think about one of the worst people you'd ever met, someone that did something terrible to you, ruining your life, forcing it to change for the worst. All those sleepless nights you had them running through your mind, the horrible scene playing on repeat to seemingly no end. You wish you had some way to make them feel as bad as you did. But what if you could?

Waiting in line, I stood outside of the building as darkness loomed overhead. The stars were barely visible in the sky, yet the crescent moon still shown. The streets next to the sidewalk were covered in small puddles from the rain earlier in the day, reflecting the street lights in its presence.
The line moved up one, a single person stepping inside to have their darkest fantasies granted.
See, you may find it strange, the ability to have dark wishes granted, but it is the one thing that keeps us sane. An impossible invention created by a madman. They have only one rule to keep safety in line, nothing that happens in the building can carry through beyond the walls. You can't wish for all the money in a bank, nor someone you hate to die. None of it can happen. It is all its one self-contained experience.
Now, you may be wondering what my deepest darkest desire may be. Let me begin by telling you a story.

As I awaited my ride home from work, I was greeted by a man with cruel intentions in his heart. I could see it in his eyes and smell the grotesque musk from his unkept clothing. I knew he was planning something but it wasn't clear to me quite what they were.
He asked me to follow him behind the building. I shook my head, knowing full well he had no power over me. I thought wrong. Somehow, for some strange reason, when he told me to do something I was forced to do it, lacking any sort of control over my body. It was like I was a puppet being dragged around by unkind words.
After I found myself behind the building, I could feel my phone buzzing in my pocket. He instructed me not to answer it, so I was forced to bend to his will. I asked myself what he planned to do to me, knowing full well what it was going to be.
He instructed me stand perfectly still and I was forced to do so, my breaths shortened to ensure my chest remained still as well. He hungrily eyed me up and down, admiring my body in a way that disgusted me. He then showed me a picture from his phone of a man I worked with. He instructed me to kill this man as soon as I am freely able. The next time I saw the man I was told to kill him.
He then told me to forget everything that had just happened and return home like normal. What he failed to realize was whatever he had to have control over me, it only controlled motor functions, it had no power over erasing memories, nor acting different than you normally would.
No matter what the device was able to do, I was still instructed to kill a man I barely knew. And even still, I have yet to do it.

It was now my turn to enter the building. I came inside, wishing to forget everything I was told in hopes that it would keep me from killing someone. The twist only stretches further onward when I knew deep down the true intention. I knew the man instructing me worked there. I knew how he got the ability to control me. Breaking the rules of his workplace to manipulate someone.
His eyes were wide upon looking my direction. He quickly looked the other way, pretending he didn't notice me.
I was lead by a muscular man with a dozen tattoos running down his arm. He got me into the room and I told him my deepest and darkest desire. I showed him a picture of the man who was controlling me, the man wishing death upon a friend. I told him I wanted the man dead.

01 "A Monstrous Storm"

The shadows crept in through the window is the dark clouds overtook the mid-afternoon sky. A feeling of dread and hopelessness flooded me, tying my stomach into a knot. Looking at the clouds, I saw a streak of purple lightning streaking across the sky until it crashed down somewhere along the skyline with a thunderous boom, followed shortly by the ground rumbling beneath my feet. It was jarring. what started as a regular summer afternoon was quickly turning into something dreadful. The nearby trees were all swaying lightly in the breeze as rain gradually started pouring down, eventually creating a curtain of turrential downpour that threatened to flood the streets. Another flash of light followed by another thunderous boom forced me to look away from the window. It was becoming far too real for me. The oncoming storm was becoming too much to bear. I walked back into my bedroom and sat in front of my television. There was a news guy standing before a weather map. He was po...

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"Tapping"

T here are some things we are all afraid of, whether or not we choose to admit it to ourselves. Perhaps you feel that the ocean is a safe place, yet when you arrive you find yourself fearing what may be swimming below you. What brushed up against your leg? Can they feel you trembling? Can they smell your fear? There I lay, in bed in an attempt to fall asleep. My television was sitting at a low volume as to not awaken me by surprise as I drift to sleep. I've had the unpleasant experience before. Tonight, I turned to my side, facing away from the harsh light of the television, yet still able to make out almost perfectly what they were saying. What was on right now was a couple arguing in a sitcom. I didn't care much for what they were saying, but the roar of the laugh track after every line or two was somewhat soothing to me. I was so close to drifting to sleep, when across the room there came a tapping on my window. I sat up and turned toward the window. It was pitch black...
