"The Vegan Water"

Traveling deep into the jungle, we come across food. It is a bush of berries. Finally, after what feels like an eternity without food, your hunger can be quenched. You can almost smell the sweet essence radiating off of these luscious fruits. You reach your hand out to pick one to pop into your mouth. You stop short as you are reminded there are some berries laced with poison that lurk in woods like your own. Do you dare eat it and risk death?

Many years ago, a strange phenomenon swept the nation, wiping out vegans. It was something in the plants that changed, made them poisonous to humans. Other animals, the plants treated with kindness. Only humans, did they decide to lash out at. People began turning on one another, pointing fingers at the living and calling people out for not being real vegans, else they would be dead.
Life since has been far different than we expected. We knew we'd have to be living off of food that was heavily processed to get rid of the toxins the plants held. In doing so, unfortunately, they found that in doing this you would gain no nutrition in doing this. Junk food was the only way we could survive. We were all thankful the fast food places and the factories producing the incredibly unhealthy food existed.
As for a dark turn of events, the plants must have caught on to what we were doing. This I foolishly say as though plants are alive. They must have somehow realized that we were doing a little too well for ourselves, still living and all. We're unsure as to what they have done, but I'm a follower of a conspiracy that the plants poisoned the water.
Many believe they wanted to kill off humanity for destroying the environment, or whatever the government tells us. The plants wanted to kill us off but with little success. Instead, they wanted to try a different tactic, making the water poisonous.
No matter what you might believe, there is currently no safe drinking water outside of bottled water, the ones prepackaged before the outbreak of toxins. I was lucky enough to have a case of bottled water to last me a little while. Others online have resorted to darker means, recycling their urine and making it into drinking water like on those survival shows. I knew I could never resort to such tactics.
However, in knowing that the water was toxic, I find myself incredibly skeptical as to whether I should drink the water or not. A part of me knew for certain the water was safe, but on the other hand, what if the water was turned poisonous much sooner than they realized? What if the water in my bottles were infected, the batch they didn't catch that was sent out incorrectly?
I didn't have a choice but to be alone with my water. After all, what was I going to do, ask my neighbor for some water when they could have a supply even shorter than my own?
At the present moment, I have yet to take a single sip of the bottled water. I can feel my tongue drying up. I can feel my throat sticking together, one side to the other from being so dry. I craved water with everything in my. I was tempted to look up the tutorials of making urine drinkable, but I don't think I'd be able to stomach it.
I've consumed all the ice chips from the frozen foods and look outside every day in hopes it might rain. Nothing comes. Perhaps the plants have it in with the weather as well?
I was reaching the point where I could feel my heart beat slowing, some part of my body swelling from a lack of water.
I grabbed a bottle of water from the package. I knew it had the possibility of being poison. If it wasn't, I'd have enough to last me until they fix the problem in getting people safe drinking water again.
I opened the bottle and took a sip. I could feel my mouth jumping back to life, like a sponge, absorbing every drop. I missed it terribly.
Almost as soon as I finished the bottle, I began feeling sick, like I was about to vomit. I ran to the toilet and threw up, blood dribbling out of my mouth. I was right.

01 "A Monstrous Storm"

The shadows crept in through the window is the dark clouds overtook the mid-afternoon sky. A feeling of dread and hopelessness flooded me, tying my stomach into a knot. Looking at the clouds, I saw a streak of purple lightning streaking across the sky until it crashed down somewhere along the skyline with a thunderous boom, followed shortly by the ground rumbling beneath my feet. It was jarring. what started as a regular summer afternoon was quickly turning into something dreadful. The nearby trees were all swaying lightly in the breeze as rain gradually started pouring down, eventually creating a curtain of turrential downpour that threatened to flood the streets. Another flash of light followed by another thunderous boom forced me to look away from the window. It was becoming far too real for me. The oncoming storm was becoming too much to bear. I walked back into my bedroom and sat in front of my television. There was a news guy standing before a weather map. He was po...

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"Tapping"

T here are some things we are all afraid of, whether or not we choose to admit it to ourselves. Perhaps you feel that the ocean is a safe place, yet when you arrive you find yourself fearing what may be swimming below you. What brushed up against your leg? Can they feel you trembling? Can they smell your fear? There I lay, in bed in an attempt to fall asleep. My television was sitting at a low volume as to not awaken me by surprise as I drift to sleep. I've had the unpleasant experience before. Tonight, I turned to my side, facing away from the harsh light of the television, yet still able to make out almost perfectly what they were saying. What was on right now was a couple arguing in a sitcom. I didn't care much for what they were saying, but the roar of the laugh track after every line or two was somewhat soothing to me. I was so close to drifting to sleep, when across the room there came a tapping on my window. I sat up and turned toward the window. It was pitch black...
