"The Halloween Book"

Horror is a thing that can be debated, is it something that's created or is it something that only exists for the sake of a scare? The answer to this, as most horror stories go, is that horror is something that can easily exist but causes nothing but harm to the people associated with it. But what if it were created out of nothing? Who would do it? And why?

It was Halloween night and my friend, Charles and I, were awaiting the arrival of two other guests, Kara and Michelle. Of course, they were supposed to be our dates for tonight. Well, Kara was supposed to be mine, whereas Michelle was Charles' girlfriend. I was planning on making my move on Kara tonight.
We heard the doorbell ring just as our scary movie had finished. It felt almost as though they'd planned it to try to get out of watching the movie with us.
We all sat down on the couch, next to our dates. Charles put his arm around his girlfriend while Kara and I just sat next to each other, awkwardly chuckling and stealing glances at each other.
I jumped up from the couch to escape the awkward tension and asked the group if they wanted to play a scary game, 'Bloody Goji'. They seemed interested, so I laid down the rules. We all have to take turns in the bathroom. We had to turn off the lights and say, "Bloody Goji" three times fast. If you chicken out and leave before your turn is done, you lose.
Kara already admitted she didn't want to play, so the rest of us did. I went first, then Michelle, than Charles. Nobody chickened out and left early, but it was a scary experience nonetheless.
We all had a good laugh, and I stood by Kara in defending her so that she didn't feel bad about not participating. I felt her cling to my arm somewhat, and it filled me with an indescribably, warm joyous feeling.
We were about to return to the living room when we heard a witches cackle, followed by a dark shadow escaping the opening to the bathroom door. Who was making that shadow appear? I glared at Charles as I noticed Kara freaking out.
"Don't look at me, I didn't do this," he defended himself.
Our eyes followed the shadow to this book that had mysteriously appeared on the coffee table. Now I knew for a fact that Charles had done it, no matter how hard he insisted he hadn't.
We approached the book with curiosity. Charles grabbed it and opened it, each of us looking over his shoulder and gazing at the contents. As he flipped through, I saw things about Unicorns and Yellow Jacket swarms.
Finally, he stopped flipping when he saw the page that had a creeping looking porcelain doll on it. The title below read, 'Summoning the Demonic Doll'. He read it aloud, trying to hold back a laugh as he was doing so. There's no way this book was for real.
Without warning he began to read this foreign language aloud. The way he read it so fluently lead me to believe even further that he had planted the book there.
There was a slight breeze inside the house, then nothing else happened.
We found ourselves looking around in hopes that the doll might appear. After what seemed like no luck was on our side, we gathered and sat down to watch a horror movie. Kara and Michelle claimed they didn't want to, but once it started they were clinging to our arms.
At the most inconvenient spot possible, the moment right before a jump scare was supposed to hit, we heard a noise coming from down the hall, a little girl's voice?
We got up and followed the sound of the voice. There, at the end of the hall, we found a doll. It was the same doll from the book.
"I want to play a game," it said in a disturbingly cheery voice.
"What game?" I asked, terrified completely of the situation.
"Hide and Seek," she said in a deep and demonic voice. Then, the lights went out. "Ready or not, here I come!"

01 "A Monstrous Storm"

The shadows crept in through the window is the dark clouds overtook the mid-afternoon sky. A feeling of dread and hopelessness flooded me, tying my stomach into a knot. Looking at the clouds, I saw a streak of purple lightning streaking across the sky until it crashed down somewhere along the skyline with a thunderous boom, followed shortly by the ground rumbling beneath my feet. It was jarring. what started as a regular summer afternoon was quickly turning into something dreadful. The nearby trees were all swaying lightly in the breeze as rain gradually started pouring down, eventually creating a curtain of turrential downpour that threatened to flood the streets. Another flash of light followed by another thunderous boom forced me to look away from the window. It was becoming far too real for me. The oncoming storm was becoming too much to bear. I walked back into my bedroom and sat in front of my television. There was a news guy standing before a weather map. He was po...

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"Let it Snow"

I t was beginning to look a lot like Christmas. There was snow all over the ground, children running around and playing in it. I saw one family building a snowman together. I saw another family making small forts and throwing snowballs at each other from behind them, before ducking down to make sure they didn't get hit. There was so much laughter and joy that it would be difficult to hold anything but a smile on your face. I turned away from the window when I saw my phone light up, I'd gotten a text from my sister. She asked if I had everything ready for Christmas. They weren't coming to my place, not with it looking the way it does right now. We were supposed to be going to her place for Christmas. I asked her about that, only to be told that she's having her place renovated and that someone else had already apparently confirmed it with me. I told her nobody had. She only told me to get my place ready for Christmas, she'll worry about the food. I hurried put as...
