"Stone Hearted"

People do strange things when they're in love with someone. They might write them love letters or poems to express how they feel. They might think about them day and night, like a magnet that refuses to let go of your mind once attracted. You might even try to hide your feelings all together. No matter which way you shake it, everyone reacts different to falling in love.

Standing before the bathroom mirror, I scrubbed away at my face and around my eyes to get rid of the makeup I had on earlier. As I scrubbed, I couldn't help but think back to the horrifying scene taking place at the mall earlier. There was this guy in some kind of grey mask.
I was walking with my friends to grab a bite to eat over by the food court. We heard someone screaming so we looked at what was happening. This guy in a grey mask hand his arm outstretched toward this guy. The guy was floating above the ground. As he raised his arm higher, higher up the man went. As we got closer to see where the guy was at, some people were grabbing at the guy in the mask to let him down.
Higher and higher the man went until he hit the ceiling. His arm stopped and he nodded, agreeing with what the people were yelling at him and begging him to do, let him down. The guy in the mask dropped his hand back down to his side and the guy in the air came plummeting down, screaming until he hit the ground. There was silence followed by horrified gasps of the unfortunate souls bearing witness.
As everyone gathered to see if the man was okay, the guy in the mask looked up at me and ran away from the entire situation. I would have ratted him out by by the time I'd realized what had happened, I thought this was some kind of twisted dream I had yet to wake up from. I didn't know what was real anymore, not even now.
After reflecting a short while, I left the bathroom and headed to bed. I hoped that as I dreamt, the nightmare that had happened earlier would be washed away.

I found myself in a wooded area, just before the sun was going down. The world was swept over in a blue-green haze. I looked around me and found that I was all alone. I had one goal in mind, I wanted to get out, to go home. I moved forward through the trees until I heard some people muttering in a low enough tone that you could make out no words.
As I got closer, the people looked at me, their grey skin tone a little startling. Approaching them made them back away from me until they took off running through the trees until they were completely gone from sight.
Why were they so afraid of me?
I heard the sound of footsteps behind me. There was a man there with a mask exactly like the one I saw earlier. I didn't know who he was but I found comfort in him being there and watching over me. I approached him and he reached out his hand, beckoning me to follow him. And I did just that.
I chased him through the trees, struggling to keep up, but not feeling winded in the least.
He ended up leading me to this big space craft. I knew nothing of it, but I was in love with the shape of it and the power behind it.
The man in the mask spoke to me, shaking his head up and down slightly as he did, "This is our escape, we can finally be free together."
Words couldn't quite express the way I felt. In reality I was at a loss, confused on what was happening in the situation, but the feelings I felt were ones of love. I wanted so badly to run up and just hug him, never letting go.
We got inside. He stood behind the panel and powered the thing on. As he did, I looked out the window at the world we were leaving behind. Through the trees, I could make out a few more people with grey faces, they were charging toward the ship. Fortunately for us, we took off before they could reach us.

I awoke, startled by some kind of noise. I looked around the room, still blanketed by the night. I saw a shadow moving along the wall, followed by heavy breathing. As a face comes forth from the shadows, I let out a startled scream. It was the man in the mask. And to my horror, it wasn't a mask, it was pure stone.

01 "A Monstrous Storm"

The shadows crept in through the window is the dark clouds overtook the mid-afternoon sky. A feeling of dread and hopelessness flooded me, tying my stomach into a knot. Looking at the clouds, I saw a streak of purple lightning streaking across the sky until it crashed down somewhere along the skyline with a thunderous boom, followed shortly by the ground rumbling beneath my feet. It was jarring. what started as a regular summer afternoon was quickly turning into something dreadful. The nearby trees were all swaying lightly in the breeze as rain gradually started pouring down, eventually creating a curtain of turrential downpour that threatened to flood the streets. Another flash of light followed by another thunderous boom forced me to look away from the window. It was becoming far too real for me. The oncoming storm was becoming too much to bear. I walked back into my bedroom and sat in front of my television. There was a news guy standing before a weather map. He was po...

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"Tapping"

T here are some things we are all afraid of, whether or not we choose to admit it to ourselves. Perhaps you feel that the ocean is a safe place, yet when you arrive you find yourself fearing what may be swimming below you. What brushed up against your leg? Can they feel you trembling? Can they smell your fear? There I lay, in bed in an attempt to fall asleep. My television was sitting at a low volume as to not awaken me by surprise as I drift to sleep. I've had the unpleasant experience before. Tonight, I turned to my side, facing away from the harsh light of the television, yet still able to make out almost perfectly what they were saying. What was on right now was a couple arguing in a sitcom. I didn't care much for what they were saying, but the roar of the laugh track after every line or two was somewhat soothing to me. I was so close to drifting to sleep, when across the room there came a tapping on my window. I sat up and turned toward the window. It was pitch black...
