Why is it so easy to get lines crossed when it comes to basic conversation? It's almost as though we intentionally tell people one thing when our minds are going in a direction completely different. Do we enjoy the thrill of knowing we might get caught in the lie, or is it that the simple idea of manipulation is something you might find great joy in?
I had just clocked off work after a seven hour day. Sure, it wasn't as long as I might have liked, but my feet were aching and I needed to rest for a little while before returning to do some hard work. I peered outside as I punched out with my time card. It was pouring down rain, there's no way I can walk in this. I pulled out my phone and asked my best friend if he could give me a ride home.
"What's wrong, afraid of a little water?" he laughed. Jacob loved giving me a hard time.
"No," I replied, following a fake chuckle. "It's just a far walk and I'll be soaked long before I get there."
"What's in it for me?" he asked. I waited for him to laugh to see if he was joking but nothing followed but silence.
"I'll spot you some gas money next time we hang out," I said. I waited to see if he'd accept my offer.
"Okay fine," he replied. "I'll be over there in a few." he then hung up the phone.
He and I had been friends for as long as I've lived in this town, the last year or so. We started out as co-workers but he left this place because another job was paying more. He tried talking me into working there with him but the kind of work they did over there, I just wasn't a fan of.
As I waited for him to arrive, I figured I should sit and wait at the break table. As I made my way over there, I caught a glimpse of the girl I've had a crush on for the last few months. Sure, that was when she first started here, but nonetheless, I was really into her. She has this contagious laugh that sounds beautiful, unlike one I've heard before. Her personality is probably the biggest and quirkiest out of anyone that works here.
I approached her and attempted to have a conversation with her. However, as I spoke I could tell she wasn't very interested. She never looked up from her phone and her replies only consisted of nodding her head and saying, "uh huh," a lot.
I started to walk away when I felt my phone vibrate. I looked down to see that I had a text from my friend, he was here.
After returning home, I shed my rain soaked jacket off onto my recliner and went off to the bathroom to take a shower. I hate how greasy my hair gets from working in a kitchen all day.
About midway through taking a shower, the lights went out. I felt panicked, I couldn't see anything and couldn't hear anything over the running water. I felt around for the knobs to turn the water off. I nearly slipped doing so, but found success when the turning of the knobs resulted in the quieting of the running water.
I felt for the towel I had sitting on the toilet seat. I dried my hair and my hands and felt around for my phone. It didn't take long to find me, as I received a text message from Jacob that lit my phone screen up. I picked up the phone and turned on the flashlight.
After turning on the flashlight, I searched for and put on my clothes. I then made my way to my kitchen window and looked outside to see if anyone around me had power. It was completely pitch dark out there, not even the horizon was visible. I ducked down to look up at the sky above my house. Funny, not even the moon was shown.
That's when the silhouette of a person moved away from the outside of my kitchen window. Everyone else's lights were on. Who was out there?
I stepped to my door and asked the same question aloud. I saw the person step out of the darkness. It was the girl from work I'd been crushing on, only she looked a little different. She had sharp fangs poking out of her mouth, blood running down her lips, and her eyes were solid black.
