Your eyes are one of the most easily deceptable things. Sure, you may think you see someone walking toward you from a distance, but they could very well be walking away from you. Or perhaps the thing buzzing and zooming around your head may look like a bee, but it could be a fly. These are simply tricks your eyes can play on you. But sometimes those tricks can be fatal.
My brother Dan and I sat outside on this warm summer night, drinking a beer in our shorts. It was nice to finally have a night off. After all, driving a cop car around all night to pick up speeders didn't exactly sound riveting. Instead, we were sitting before his brand new telescope. We would just sit around and talk and look up at the stars.
I wasn't much for astrology but Dan was so fascinated by it. The proof that life is out there is just before us, we just need to reach it. That was his whole idea. I didn't really much care if there was life out there, as long as I get to live my life and protect the people I care about most, that's all that matters.
We were drawn away from our conversation when Dan saw this ball of light rise up to the sky from a great distance away. I wasn't paying much attention to it, as I was looking at a social media post from a group I follow. I thought the light was someone shining a flashlight in my eyes and I'd swat it away. Dan nudged me and I saw the ball of light.
Dan ran to his telescope and repositioned it to point at the light.
"It's an orb," he said. "It looks like it's cracking open. Where did it come from?"
Almost as a response, the ball of light burst open, flooding the sky with a bright green light. And just as it had rose up, it had now faded back to the normal dark sky. What the hell was that?
It's been almost a week since the situation had taken place. The people around town call believe the light might have come by an extraterrestrial. I don't believe in aliens. I think it was just some fancy firework someone had lit up. It wasn't too far from July fourth, so it wasn't entirely out of the question.
My fellow officer Brad and I were cruising around from parking lot to parking lot around town to see if we could catch any speeders. As we waited patiently to do our usual route, I heard over the radio that there was some kind of domestic disturbance in progress. I thought that to be rather odd, as it was still just afternoon. What could be going on to warrant them to call the police. They asked us to check it out, so we took a quick drive by. Sure enough, there was yelling and banging coming from inside of this apartment.
I approached the door, my hand on my gun. I knocked on the door and suddenly the yelling ended. There was silence. I shrugged it off, I could have scared them away from each other. But even so, it wouldn't hurt to see if everything was okay.
I knocked on the door again and the door swung right open, as if he was standing on the other side, waiting for me to knock to he could open it on me. He had the most unusual smile on his face, like he was hiding something.
"Is there a problem, officer?" he asked in an almost robotic voice.
"Yeah," I replied. "I got a call that there was some fighting going on here. We just wanted to make sure everything was okay."
He looked past me to see Officer Brad standing behind me. "Fighting?" he finally replied. "There's no fighting going on here, officer. Everything is fine."
"Do you mind if we take a quick look inside?" I asked, looking past him. I looked down at his face. His nose was starting to bleed. He followed my gaze down to his nose and he wiped it with his arm. He looked back up at me for a moment before darting past me and Officer Brad. He ran to his car and quickly turned the key. We scrambled to our car as he began pulling out of the parking lot.
He sped quickly away from us, so we gained quickly on his tail. Whatever he was hiding from, we were determined to find out.
"Another doppelganger has been spotted heading westbound on Jackson Street." Officer Brad said into the radio.
"Doppelganger?" I asked. "What's this talk about doppelgangers?"
"You haven't been watching the news lately, have you?" he asked. I shook my head.
"Is this about that light that went off the other night?" I asked.
He nodded. "And did you notice what was raining down when it went off? All the strange interactions we've been having with people the past few days? It's all because doppelgangers rained from the sky that night."
"You're crazy," I laughed. "What the hell makes you think doppelgangers came down from the sky?"
"Because you've been driving with your left hand the entire time. You're right handed."
