A gift that keeps on giving is a gift received with kindness in mind. It is one that you can look at with a constant reminder of what good a friend you have and the memories shared in a single inanimate object. But sometimes that token of friendship can become a reminder of a very dark time.
I just finished texting my best friend a happy birthday. She and I had been friends since we started school as children. We grew up together through a lot of the good and bad times. But now that we were no longer children, I had just the perfect gift that I knew she'd always wanted.
The gift was no ordinary gift, it was what I could only refer to as joy wrapped in a curse. From the outside it looked like an ordinary cake, dressed in a white cream. In reality the white cream was ranch, her favorite kind of dipping sauce.
The inside of the cake? Well, this isn't any ordinary cake, it holds a secret inside. I have a switch on the outside that activates these arms on the inside that open two small steel doors on top. What do I have hidden within the cake? It's her gift, a white bunny with these cute, red eyes.
It took me so long to make sure that everything turned out perfect so that this would be the best kind of birthday surprise she'd ever had. I only hoped she wouldn't try to eat the cake.
I texted her that I had a birthday surprise and she responded, telling me I should come over. I, without the slightest bit of hesitation, got in my car and headed to her house. Sure, this might seem a little assertive of me to show up so soon, but she did invite me over after all. I walked up to the door and knocked. she saw I had a cake in my hands and invited me inside.
I sat the cake down on the counter. I was surprised there weren't many people over to help her celebrate. In fact, it seemed like she was home by herself.
She and I talked about what she had planned later, she said her mother planned on picking her up in about an hour, taking her on a trip to the mall in a few hours. I was excited for her, she never really got much of a chance to leave town because she was always swamped at her job.
She handed me a knife and grabbed a few paper plates.
"You should have brought ice cream," she smiled as she handed me a plate. I really should have, considering we couldn't actually eat the cake.
I began to cut into the cake, or at least I pretended I was. I made sure the edge of the blade touched the button that would open the latches. The latches opened a little faster than I'd expected. She nearly jumped when she saw what was happening, then looked at me in disbelief.
I reached into the cake and pulled out the bunny. I handed it to her and she nearly shrieked with excitement. She held it in one and and hugged me with the other. She thanked me as she began to make mushy faces at it and calling it cute. I loved seeing her like this.
Then something hit me, I didn't get her a cage for it. Why was I letting so much slip my mind today?
I turned to the cake and pressed the button on the side for the doors to close, only they didn't. I could hear some gears grinding. What happened, did some of the ranch get stuck in the mechanism?
I reached inside to clear out some of the ranch. Just as it was all clean, the top of the box snapped shut with my hand still inside. I tried pulling it out but the doors were far too strong and kept pushing against my skin. As it closed further I could feel it cutting into my skin. I screamed and spammed the button in hopes that it would shut down, but nothing happened. The door only tried closing harder.
My friend looked over to me and tried to help but she had no idea how to.
I felt an incredible amount of pain shoot through my arm and a loud tearing noise filled the air, before being drowned out by my friend's screams. I nearly passed out, but I looked down to find that the door had torn my hand clean off.
