"The Flock"

In the span of a person's life, at least once does fate show its hand. Other times it shows you only a glimpse, leading you to decide for yourself what path needs to be followed, even if that path is one of randomness. But rest assured, in the cruel twists in the world of fate, randomness doesn't exist.
In the world I unfortunately lived, fate never fed me anything outside of cruelty and regret. There are so many things in life that had been taken from me, so many experiences left for not, so many relationships crumbling and fading without a thought before being whisked away by the sharp winds from the storm of life. There are many things I had yet to do in my life because I was focused on unimportance.
I had recently decided the best step forward in taking my life back was to go camping. And now here I lay, within a tent. I was alone with only the moon above me as a companion. The reason I decided camping would be the best option was because it felt like a nice night to do it, a warm clear sky looming overhead, the nearly soothing sound of crickets chirping in the distance, everything felt so perfect right now where I lay, within my tent.
My eyes grew heavier as I lay on my back, thinking about how peaceful it was out here. That was, until I heard a noise outside that made me sit straight up. I moved out from my sleeping bag and listened closely to see it I could hear that noise again. And almost as if on cue, the noise repeated itself, the sound of a footstep crunching over the ground, just outside my tent. I grabbed a flashlight and slowly, cautiously, unzipped the opening. I waved my flashlight around the entrance to see if something was there. There was nothing. I walked around my tent, waving my flashlight around. Still, nothing could be spotted.
I shrugged it off and began crawling back in my tent. I stopped myself when I felt a hand grip my shoulder. Without a second thought, I darted forward, toward the woods. It didn't take much for the thing to let go. Unfortunately, whatever it was was chasing me. I could hear inhuman grunts and heavy footsteps coming from behind me and growing louder as it drew nearer. I charged forward as fast as I could, dodging as many obstacles in the woods as I could.
I ran and ran until I was breathless. I began to slow my pace, my heartbeat pounding in my ears. I listened carefully for the footsteps, but there was silence. Perhaps I had outran the creature. I was about to turn back when out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a light. Was somebody out here? Maybe I can ask someone for help if indeed the light is coming from another person.
As I walked in the direction, the light grew slightly brighter until I was able to make out a small wood cabin. Just as the cabin came into view, I heard the same familiar noise of the grunting of the creature. How had it found me again? Perhaps it was drawn to the light. I charged toward the cabin with every once of breath within me. I arrived on the steps and saw a light was on inside. Without even looking behind me, I pounded on the door until I was greeted by a man with long, brown, unkept hair and a lengthy beard and moustache to match. He invited me in and I slammed the door behind me.
The man invited me to take a seat next to the fire inside.
"What brings you here?" asks the man. "You're so out of breath, you must've been running from something."
"I was," I replied. "There was this thing outside my cabin, I panicked when it touched me, ran off, and saw this place in the distance."
"Oh, you must've come across one of the creatures from the Flock." he said.
"What's the flock?" I asked. "I mean it wasn't any kind of bird if that's what you're referring to."
This made him chuckle. "No, the Flock is what you city folk might call zombies. They must've smelled you from a few miles out and thought they'd catch a quick bite."
I couldn't help but laugh, there's no such thing as zombies. "Oh sure, zombies are running around a campsite."
"Well of course they are, I house them. The thing outside must've panicked when they saw you running up here. Because those things are fast. If they wanted you dead they would've easily made it so."
I swallowed hard. "You house them?" I looked all around the cabin and found a bunch more hideous twisted faces of these creatures peering in on us. "What are you going to do with me?"
"Well, I'd tell you," he said, his face twisting into something more sinister, "but then I'd have to let them kill you."

01 "A Monstrous Storm"

The shadows crept in through the window is the dark clouds overtook the mid-afternoon sky. A feeling of dread and hopelessness flooded me, tying my stomach into a knot. Looking at the clouds, I saw a streak of purple lightning streaking across the sky until it crashed down somewhere along the skyline with a thunderous boom, followed shortly by the ground rumbling beneath my feet. It was jarring. what started as a regular summer afternoon was quickly turning into something dreadful. The nearby trees were all swaying lightly in the breeze as rain gradually started pouring down, eventually creating a curtain of turrential downpour that threatened to flood the streets. Another flash of light followed by another thunderous boom forced me to look away from the window. It was becoming far too real for me. The oncoming storm was becoming too much to bear. I walked back into my bedroom and sat in front of my television. There was a news guy standing before a weather map. He was po...

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"Tapping"

T here are some things we are all afraid of, whether or not we choose to admit it to ourselves. Perhaps you feel that the ocean is a safe place, yet when you arrive you find yourself fearing what may be swimming below you. What brushed up against your leg? Can they feel you trembling? Can they smell your fear? There I lay, in bed in an attempt to fall asleep. My television was sitting at a low volume as to not awaken me by surprise as I drift to sleep. I've had the unpleasant experience before. Tonight, I turned to my side, facing away from the harsh light of the television, yet still able to make out almost perfectly what they were saying. What was on right now was a couple arguing in a sitcom. I didn't care much for what they were saying, but the roar of the laugh track after every line or two was somewhat soothing to me. I was so close to drifting to sleep, when across the room there came a tapping on my window. I sat up and turned toward the window. It was pitch black...
