"The Countdown"

The moment was nearly upon us, the end of what we figured to be one of the worst years in a while. I was at a party with a few close friends, beers in hand and mingling with completely random people who's decided to show up to help us celebrate. The house was nothing more than a single floor, which meant it couldn't house as many people. Some people didn't mind, however, as some of them had decided to gather together outside.
We made sure not to have our music blasting too loud, as to not disturb the neighbors. It was a celebration for us, but for anyone neighboring us, we didn't want the last day of this nightmare of a year to be terrible for anyone else. We all looked forward to the day that would follow, bringing a new year close behind. A new year with a brand new face, a new feel, new and beautiful everything, untouched by the evils of the world.
I looked down at my watch and turned to my friends, it was 11:58. We hurried to the television to see a countdown appear on the screen. We'd turned it on to the new years eve on Time Square, the ball was getting ready to drop. I told my friends to gather everyone, telling them the countdown for the last sixty seconds was about to begin.
People came flooding in through the front and back doors, finding seats and leaning against walls, whatever they needed to in order to get a good view of the television.
Finally, the last ten seconds were being counted down. Everyone on television counted, everyone in the room followed suit.
"Three!"
"Two!"
"One!"
The exact instance we hit one, the power went out and the room fell dark and silent, except for the few faint shrieks of some people jumping in surprise. My friend got up and went over to the fuse box to see what had happened. Nothing was out of the ordinary.
We went outside and looked around, up and down the streets. Completely dark. Not even a single streetlight shown the slightest hint of light. Through the faintest hints of moonlight, we saw other people leaving their houses, asking around what had happened. Nobody had an answer.
When we looked just beyond the street, in someone's back yard, there was a massive object sticking out of the ground. Was that a UFO?
We all gathered closer to examine the thing. A noise came from below the object. A platform was lowering with a bright beam of light behind it. As the platform continued to lower, a strange creature approached us. It appeared to be two people in space suits, except for the space suit being torn to shreds, and that their bodies appeared to be fused together at the head and the mid-section of their bodies. They were nearly completely covered in blood.
When their full body came into view, both mouths said in unison, a voice high pitched and a voice low pitch, said "Help Us."

"Hooked"

T he summer can be the perfect time to get away, to unwind while kicking your feet into the cool water while the hot sun is beaming down on you. But what if the bright summer sky was hiding behind it something even darker? I had been waiting for today all week. They'd finally opened the stream up for fishing. I was a little upset at the fact they'd decided to raise prices, but I didn't care, it was a nice day outside and I wasn't about to waste it sitting inside when I could be fishing. With my tacklebox in hand and my fishing pole in the other, I made my way to my truck. I threw everything in the back seat. I was about to head to the driver's seat but hesitated when I thought about bringing my cooler. I had one in the back ready for fish, as well as housing some canisters of worms. But what if I brought one along for some drinks? After a few moments I decided it might not be the greatest idea. It would be too much to carry and I didn't trust anyone that...

"The Light"

My day off from work was supposed to be a day for me to relax and unwind and rest. The past few days had been incredibly stressful, from hateful customers to managers that expected everyone to do their jobs for them, and everything in between. It was nice to finally have that down time to spend away from all that. I'd decided to spend my time, not to get things done around the house, but to play a new game I'd been hooked on lately. It was this puzzle game where every room is seemingly randomly generated, each with clean and clever puzzles. After booting up the game, I was presented a room with white padded tiles all over the walls. There were a few green, red, and blue squares. I guess my job was to manipulate those tiles somehow to get me from where I was no, up to the top of the level. I looked around the room and could barely make out an opening. I pressed a single button to get myself started when the light in my bedroom burnt out, leaving me shrouded in darkness...

"Baby Talk"

C ommunication is one of the strongest bonds we have as people. We use it to get our feelings across, whether they be disagreements or compliments, or even to complain about our days. But what happens when even the most talkative person won't even mutter a word? At one point in time, if you told me that our baby would grow up just like any normal one would, I would have absolutely believed you. But why is it that now our child has the ability to speak long before any normal kid should be able to? The one painful thing that comes from her being able to talk is that she doesn't really want to stop. It was cute when it first started, she'd make all these silly noises and attempt to make words out of them. Now she has learned speech so well that we're surprised she can't read yet. We wanted to send her off to a school for gifted kids so that she could learn with people nearly as smart as she is. As much as I'd enjoy this idea, however, the wife and I would a...
