Driving is usually a relaxing thing for me to do. Pushing my foot down softly on the gas and feeling it move only as fast as I tell it to, makes the car feel as if we are one. Watching over the road and carefully maneuvering over past the curves is almost second nature to me at this point, it's nearly effortless. There's only one thing that bothers me when driving that seldom happens. Traffic.
Traffic was what I was stuck in the middle of and I hated every moment of it. I was in the center lane of a three lane highway. I stood slightly to see over the car in front of me to see how long the line of cars went on for. I saw nothing but a seemingly endless line of cars before me before the road swerved to meet a turn sharp enough I could see nothing past it.
I looked to my left when I saw some movement. Somehow the left lane wasn't as packed as the other two lanes. There was no opening in between cars, but the cars were moving at a rate much steadier than my own. I peered back to see how long the line behind me went on for. I was completely unable to make out where the line of cars ended. I looked to the left lane and, to my amazement, I saw an opening. I continued looking at the opening through the rear view mirror, eagerly anticipating its arrival. When it finally came, I backed up slightly, ensuring I didn't hit the car behind me, and turned into the left lane.
A sigh of relief escaped my lips. Finally, I was free.
I made my way down the road, stopping infrequently as I previously would have. I had to admit, however, I wasn't all too familiar with the road I was traveling down. I figured the reason so few people traveled down this way was because it ended in a forced turnoff to another street. I looked ahead of me as far as I could and saw nothing but the same long stretch of road. Surely if there was a turnoff on this road it would have presented itself already, right?
I shrugged it off and continued. There's no turning back now, I thought.
A sound in the distance caught my attention, something behind me. I saw the cars behind me, as well as in front of me start to pull off to the side of the road. As I was about to do so, my car began stalling on me. My car refused to move. I turned the car off and turned the key to turn it back on. When I did this, the car wouldn't even start. "Are you f*cking serious!" I exclaimed.
I looked in my rear view mirror and saw the flashing red and blue lights. They were approaching faster than I had anticipated. I crossed my fingers and tried once again to get my car to start. Still nothing. I did the only thing I could do. I got out of my vehicle and started to run. I ran the opposite direction of the road as fast as I could. I stopped when I knew I was far enough away. I turned to face the road, the only thing I was able to do was stare in horror at the accident that unfolded. The soul piercing sound of tires squealing before metal against metal and glass shattering. It was far but still close enough to see the horrific accident that was unfolding, the cries of several terrified people, the trail of smoke that began to flood the sky, drifting from the car that refused to start.
All you could think to do now was to run.
