"The Inhaler"

A ccidents are a simple fact of life. Perfection is something we will often strive for, but can rarely achieve. It's heartbreaking but it's what makes us human. Some mistakes can seem disastrous and, in reality, be anything but. Other mistakes, the ones that can pass us without any realization, are the ones that cause the most damage. At times, they can even be fatal. The fryers beeping rang through my ears as I, as well as several of the other cooks, rushed around the kitchen to get food out the door on time. It seemed a bit extreme the overwhelming amount of business we were experiencing right now. I understood there was a festival going on in town, but we were the furthest restaurant from the happenings. I have no doubt the manager was pleased with the influx of customers. It's always about the money. It was difficult to keep my head straight as it was spinning to every spot in the kitchen at once. If it was happening, I could feel it digging into the back of my mi...

"Vultures"

I t's interesting how the collectives mind works. A disaster takes place. It may not affect the mass or they may believe it to be fake, and they ignore the warnings that follow. There's so much mistrust of authority and so many conspiracies that it's now normal to believe the higher up's staged something to get new rules in place. It splits people, and instead of the conversation of why, we point fingers and break relationships. This is why wars don't end, not because it's nature, but because it's easier to fight than to resolve.           After I got out of bed, excitement filling me as it was Halloween, I got my costume ready and threw it on. It was a cut up shirt with some fake blood in spots to look like I'd been stabbed. I got out my tube of fake blood and applied it over my exposed skin, only making it look more realistic. Then, for the finishing touch, I grabbed half a package of hamburger meat from the fridge and draped it over myself. As you h...

"Baby Monitor"

I t is often hard to say what exists and what doesn't. Some believe ghosts and demons to lurk in the shadows. Others see the idea ascension of the mind to be something within the realm of extreme possibility. But when do we cross the line between wild beliefs and insanity? And when do we realize that with so many supernatural realms, it can be possible to tamper with one so much it interferes with another? Sleep was supposed to be a necessary part of the night. So why is it that our screaming baby has to keep us up from it? I was tired of being the only person to get up in the middle of the night to get her back to sleep. I nudged my husband to remind him it was his turn. He didn't reply with as much as a groan. He was too far out of it to be bothered. With a sigh, I sat up and threw the covers off of myself and made my way to our daughter's bedroom. I had to flick on several lights, for the hallways were too dark to see even my own feet in front of me. Finally, I mad...

"Another Layer [Part 2]"

T here are some things that are destined to happen. Sure, we might not know what those things are as they stand in the present. Once those things happen, they couldn't have gone any other way. The events created something for the future, whether it be an invention we can't live without or a concept we couldn't imagine not existing within our minds. But we have nothing to worry about. After all, whatever happens happens, right? As her conversation further intrigued me, she and I made our way to my home. We intended to do some research there. I figured my parents wouldn't mind me having a friend over, even though they were not warned about it ahead of time. While we walked, I figured we might as well talk some about the whole Jesus thing and how he made it back to the first 'Layer of Existence'. We knew from the short talk about him was that he died. Rather, he sacrificed himself. Certainly, he did other great things, but we chalked it up to time creating le...
